Escape (class)Room
Wednesday January 29, 2025 1:15pm - 2:30pm MST
When was the last time you saw students jumping up and down with joy after solving a problem? Bragging about it to their friends for weeks afterwards? With escape rooms in the classroom, I have witnessed this miracle! I will show you what my past escape rooms have looked like, the research behind why this works, and provide you with a starter template for making your own escape room to fit your standards.

The example escape room is for a math class setting, but the materials are applicable to all subject areas. They are recommended for secondary teachers; however, with some adjustments, they could be done in upper elementary. I also have examples of virtual escape rooms for a TUVA setting.

Experiential Real-World Learning With Agrivoltaics
Wednesday January 29, 2025 1:15pm - 2:30pm MST
Agrivoltaics is an exciting method of land use in which the same land is used for both growing food and producing solar energy. Agrivoltaics has the potential to mitigate some of the challenges with current food production, including water availability and energy needs, while increasing crop yields. In this session, you will become familiar with agrivoltiacs and learn ways to explore this science with your students through hands-on investigations. Students’ experiential learning with agrivoltaics kits provides a rich opportunity for teaching across the curriculum and for tapping into diverse funds of knowledge. You will leave with ideas for three-dimensional learning activities that are standards-aligned and adaptable for grades 6-12.

Learner Powered Lessons: Turning A DI Math Lesson Into An IBL Lesson To Improve Understanding And Retention
Wednesday January 29, 2025 1:15pm - 2:30pm MST
Direct Instruction lessons are easy for teachers to plan and enact, but they are hard for learners, as they create mimicked behaviors rather than long term understanding. But how do we change a DI lesson into a lesson that allows learners to inquire and investigate in order to develop a persistent understanding? It might not be as hard as you think! Come and learn how to work less so students can think more.

Leveraging the Power of Algebra Tiles
Wednesday January 29, 2025 1:15pm - 2:30pm MST
Have you ever had a student ask how 2x is different from x^2? Algebra tiles are an invaluable tool for creating connections between abstract ideas and tangible understanding. They help learners make sense of pivotal concepts such as the distributive property, simplifying expressions, and solving equations. Algebra tiles also offer a visual way to explain why the inequality sign seems to 'flip' when dealing with negative coefficients. Join this session to discover how algebra tiles can powerfully deepen your students' conceptual understanding of key algebraic principles.

The Shocking Truth: Electrochemical Metallurgy in Copper Ore Processing
Wednesday January 29, 2025 1:15pm - 2:30pm MST
Arizona is the Copper State because our crustal rocks contain 1000 times more copper than typical crustal rocks elsewhere, but even at 1% copper, 99% of the rocks are unusable given our current technological capabilities. In this lesson, teachers will learn one way metallurgists separate copper from its ore using electrochemistry and compete to optimize an electrowinning cell to produce the most copper in the shortest time. This lesson features chemistry and physics applications but is also adaptable to other middle and high school science contexts.
